Picking
Tasklet Mobile WMS provides solid built-in support for license plate picking: operators can scan a license plate to filter pick lines to matching items, pick individual items from a license plate, and (from MOB5.64 onwards) pick an entire license plate in a single scan. For teams that ship using totes or packages, the Pack & Ship module converts tote IDs into license plates during the packing stage.
Advanced License Plating for Tasklet builds on this foundation for businesses that need deeper license plate control during the pick itself, rather than in a separate packing step. The app adds:
- Hierarchy-aware picking — picking whole pallets or individual cartons from a multi-level license plate hierarchy, with correct bin resolution across multi-level postings.
- Destination license plate assignment at pick time — the operator designates or creates the destination license plate during the pick, recording the source-to-destination mapping in the license plate ledger before the shipment is packed.
- Single-lot validation — a per-customer enforcement rule that restricts all picks for an order, or each individual license plate picked, to a single lot number.
- Freight pallet management — consolidation of outbound license plates into freight pallets, truck load scanning, and a pre-posting check that all pallets have been loaded.
- License plate entries — a permanent audit ledger that records every pick movement by license plate, supporting traceability requirements that extend beyond what the standard tote-to-LP conversion provides.
These capabilities complement the standard Tasklet pick flow; they do not replace it. Where the standard flow meets business needs, no additional configuration is required.
Pick Methods
Full License Plate Pick
The operator scans a license plate label from the pick order lines. The system evaluates whether the entire license plate content satisfies the open pick lines. If it does, the full quantity is registered in one scan without any further manual input. If the license plate only partially covers the pick requirement, the pick lines are filtered to those matched by the scanned license plate and the operator completes the remaining details.
This extends the Tasklet "pick entire license plate" capability by also handling the partial-fulfillment case and by recording every movement as a license plate entry.
Partial License Plate Pick
The operator selects an individual pick line and provides the source license plate, quantity, and destination license plate. The destination may be:
- An existing license plate scanned at the device.
- A new license plate created on the device during the pick. The operator enters a new license plate number; the system validates it against GS1 SSCC length and check-digit rules when GS1 compliance is enabled for the location.
The source-to-destination mapping is buffered per pick registration and resolved in the license plate ledger when the pick is posted.
Item Label Pick
The operator scans an item label. The system reads the barcode and auto-populates lot number, expiration date, and quantity where those values are encoded. The operator confirms the quantity and provides the destination license plate. For items configured with the Connect Dual Unit of Measure app, an additional step prompts for the unit count.
Hierarchical License Plate Picking
Tasklet Mobile WMS supports hierarchical license plate structures — a license plate can contain other license plates, forming a tree of nested levels. The app builds on this to provide pick-time awareness of the full hierarchy: registrations, bin resolution, and ledger entries are all handled correctly regardless of how many levels deep the structure goes. Common configurations include a pallet containing cartons, or a pallet containing cartons that each contain serialised inner packs.
Picking a Whole Pallet
When the operator scans a parent pallet license plate, the system resolves all child license plates beneath it and registers the full hierarchy as a single pick movement. This is the fastest method when the entire pallet is allocated to the order.
Picking Individual Cartons from a Pallet
When only a subset of cartons on a pallet is required, the operator scans each individual child license plate. Each scan is registered against the relevant pick line independently, leaving the remaining cartons undisturbed on the source pallet.
Consolidating Loose Cartons onto a New Pallet
When picking multiple loose cartons that should be consolidated for outbound shipment, the operator creates a new destination pallet license plate on the device and scans each carton into it. The system records all source-to-destination license plate relationships in the ledger.
Why hierarchy caching matters: When a parent pallet with two or more child license plates is picked in a single posting, posting the first child updates the parent LP's bin context. Without caching, subsequent children would resolve their source bin from the mutated state and fail. The app captures the hierarchy at the point the pick starts and uses that snapshot throughout the posting run.
Single-Lot Picking Validation
For businesses with strict product traceability requirements, the app can enforce that only a single lot number is present in a pick, either across the whole order or within each individual license plate. The rule is set per customer on the Customer card and applies automatically when that customer's orders are picked.
| Setting | Behaviour |
|---|---|
| Disabled | No lot restriction is applied. |
| Per Order | All registrations for the pick order must use the same lot number. The first lot scanned becomes the master lot; any subsequent scan with a different lot raises a validation error at the device. |
| Per License Plate | Each license plate scanned during the pick may contain only one lot number per item. A license plate that holds multiple lots for the same item is rejected. |
When a pick order spans multiple customers (for example, a consolidated multi-order pick), the validation is bypassed automatically because a single per-customer lot rule cannot be applied unambiguously across customers.
Merge Pick Lines
Where a pick order contains multiple lines for the same item and unit of measure, the Merge Lines action on the warehouse pick document consolidates them into a single line. This reduces the number of individual scan steps, which is particularly useful for fragmented pick orders generated from multiple sales orders.
Business Central Actions for Picking
Several pick-related actions are available directly in Business Central without requiring scanner access:
- Merge Lines — available on the warehouse pick document to consolidate pick lines before the operator starts scanning.
- Assign License Plate — manually assign a license plate to a pick line from the BC client.
- Registered Pick — the registered pick document in Business Central shows license plate information alongside standard pick details, giving supervisors a complete view of what was picked and from which license plates.
- License Plate Entries — the license plate entry ledger records every pick movement by license plate and is accessible directly from Business Central for audit and traceability purposes.
Freight Pallet Management
After picking, outbound license plates need to be consolidated onto freight pallets and loaded onto a truck before the warehouse shipment can be posted. This process runs within Tasklet Mobile WMS and Business Central.
Manifest — Freight Region
A Manifest - Freight Region screen is accessible from the Tasklet WMS main menu. The operator adds records by scanning a delivery barcode containing a warehouse shipment number. If the shipment spans multiple freight regions, each combination is added as a separate row. Rows can be deleted manually.
Freight Pallets
Selecting a manifest record opens the freight pallets assigned to it. The Add Freight Pallet action allocates a new license plate number from the configured number series and registers it as a freight pallet for that manifest.
Selecting an individual freight pallet opens the content list. The operator adds content by scanning a license plate label or typing a number manually; content can also be deleted. When a license plate is scanned, the system confirms that it is linked to the warehouse shipment being processed — not to any other shipment or storage area — before accepting it.
The scanned license plate may be:
- A parent pallet with child license plates beneath it (a complete pallet of cartons).
- A child license plate (a carton), which may itself have a grandchild (for example, a serialised inner pack).
When a freight pallet is full, the operator creates another using Add Freight Pallet and continues scanning.
Truck Load
A Truck Load screen is accessible from the Tasklet WMS main menu. The operator scans a label containing the warehouse shipment number; a row is added with the truck sequence code from the corresponding warehouse shipment line. Each warehouse shipment carries one truck sequence code.
Opening a truck load record shows the detail page. The operator physically moves freight pallets from the staging area into the truck and scans each freight pallet label. Each scan marks that pallet as loaded against the truck load record.
Pre-posting Validation
Before a warehouse shipment is posted in Business Central, the system verifies that every freight pallet assigned to the shipment has been scanned against a truck load. If any pallets are outstanding, an error or confirmation message is raised before posting is allowed. This ensures that no freight pallet is overlooked when the shipment is closed.
Posting freight pallet content: Moving items from shipment license plates into the freight pallet license plates — and creating the corresponding license plate entries — can be triggered either as an explicit Post Freight Pallet action per freight pallet, or automatically during warehouse shipment posting. The approach is configured to suit the business process.
